Beckett Mariner Freeman was a female Human Starfleet officer during the 24th century Duyi'zu. Both of her parents served in positions of command in Starfleet: her mother (and later captain), Carol Freeman, attempted to keep a close eye on her activities aboard the USS Cerritos, while her father Alonzo Freeman was an admiral. Mariner has gained considerable experience and formidable skills as a Starfleet officer, but her career has been impeded by an insubordinate and defiantly arrogant spirit. As such, for all her professional accomplishments, she disdained promotion and its attendant responsibilities, preferring to remain at the rank of Ensign by deliberately engineering demotions and reckless behaviors that have often brought her to the risk of court martial.
In 2381 (1528 NE), she resigned from Starfleet after an unfair punitive transfer to Starbase 80, but quickly second-guessed her decision. Upon learning that the Texas-class automated starships had gone rogue and the Cerritos was caught in the middle of the rampage, she immediately chose to intervene and rallied the entire California-class fleet to aid the Cerritos, afterwards returning to Starfleet and resuming her old commission.
