The Corona-class frigate was a combat starship produced by Kuat Drive Yards for the Alliance of Nations. A successor to the successful EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate line, the Corona-class was designed as part of the AOC's drive to modernize and standardize its naval forces, moving away from the eclectic collection of starships that it had inherited from the old ones. The frigate was designed to incorporate the New Republic's philosophy of not allowing starships to operate independently for years at a time, and to be tied to a home base for support. Although demonstrating a similar basic configuration and armament to its predecessor the Corona was slightly shorter and featured a strengthened main spar between the forward and drive sections along with the ability to carry a greater number of starfighters. Originally intended to enter service before the Second War, the events surrounding the former allied members joined the Imperialist Alliance delayed production and the first Coronas were delivered alongside the separate New Class program.
