The Cryptids or commonly referred to as Monsters are species from the Malica Universe of which native inhabit the Monster World in genera known as Epinoel, which is separated from a human inhabited world, but can be accessed by technological portals shaped like ordinary doors. Originally believed humans were toxic and deadly to touch, tought only to scare as their main source until moving on to laughter, they were referred to as Cryptids due to many of notable members were related to the legends such as Bigfoot, Yeti, Loch Ness monster, and so on.
Biology[]
Cryptids are an incredibly diversified species, encompassing an endless variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and anatomical traits. Their skin can be smooth, scaly, or hairy, depending on the individual. They can have practically any number of eyes and limbs, and some even have two or three heads; although five heads is considered a rare enough trait. They can also have insectoid or crustacean legs, or tentacles. Their diet is omnivorous, including itens such as fish and fruits.
While most Cryptids are comparable in size to an average human, some can be as big as a house. Some Monsters have wings that enable them to fly, while others can cling to walls and ceilings. Some have special abilities, such as fire-breathing or changing the color of their skin to camouflage themselves. Some Cryptid have removable eyes, retractable spikes or claws, and some may even live in symbiosis with other Monsters (e.g. a Harryhausen's patron who has a smaller slug-like Monster inside his mouth serving as his tongue). Some Cryptids are not even solid, but rather made of a gelatinous blob-like substance and can pass through a sewer grade, leaving only their eyes and teeth behind (which remain capable of movement and speech).
Despite this impressive phenotype diversity, the appearance of a Cryptid still seems to be determined by genetics, as seen by the similarity between Mike Wazowski and his mother. However, it's still possible for Cryptids of the same family to not resemble each other at all, as evidenced by Mike's cousin Russell, or the fact that Boo's disguise (which resembles a mollusk-like Monster) passes off as a distant relative of Sulley. Both Waternoose and Ms. Nesbit casually assume the disguised Boo to be Sulley's daughter at first, which suggests that it might be common for Cryptids to look radically distinct from their parents.
It was later revealed these are the results of their distant ancestors being genetically engineered as war beasts in the five thousand year collapse era that torn the ancient Systems Federation apart not long after the First Keyblade War but evolved to develop sapience and slowly became more civilised and largely consumed by their guilt over what they were ordered to do during that chaotic era of Malica's history.
