Gaia is a continental planet within the Malica Universe. Formerly a colony world of the Terran Empire discovered in 527 BXC (733 NE), the planet was abruptly cut off from the homeworld following unexpected and bizarre astrological phenomena in 277 BXC (983 NE) leading to the Shinra Electric Power Company becoming the de facto government of the colony and its colossal capital city, Midgar, though the Company's environmental devastation of the planet to power the great city led to frequent clashes with the Avalanche terrorist group, and oppressive and violent measures taken to suppress the uprising.
By the time of the Worlds War, Shinra had been overthrown by Avalanche under the leadership of Cloud Strife, and the planet was able to govern itself free from its' control, which worked to rebuild Midgar after the devastation of the insurrection, but only briefly as it would fall under Shinra's control once again following its' conquest by the Empire of the Heartless in 84 AXC (1344 NE) under the leadership of Sephiroth, one of its' Thirteen Warlords and split it between Shira and Sephiroth.

History[]
Discovery and Colonization[]
Gaia was discovered by the Terran Empire in the year 4888 AFE (527 BXC/733 NE). After its surveillance, it was nominated as a possible colony world, although the Imperial surveyors did note the native human population on the planet, leading to the colony being set up in a part of the planet far from native tribes until the Imperial government can determine what to do with the tribes.
Over the next several years, the city of Midgar was erected as the colony's capital city, fueled by eight colossal energy reactors on the edges of the city. Energy control and construction efforts were widely controlled by the Shinra Electric Power Company, though the planet was still widely under the control of the Terran Empire.

Shinra Takeover[]
In 5138 AFE (277 BXC/983 NE), Gaia was suddenly cut off and isolated from the rest of Terran space, due to a combination of communications blackout and unusual astrological effects affecting the system Gaia was in. With Midgar thrown into chaos, the Shinra Company took over as the de facto government of Midgar and by extension, the rest of the colony, save for a few outlying towns far beyond Midgar and the native tribes of Gaia that remained independent of the Terran colonial government.
Over the centuries, Shinra began shaping Midgar to fit its own corporate goals, continuing energy production regardless of environmental consequences, building up its own private military which became the police force of Midgar and the oppressive tool used to secure resources and prevent uprisings.
Insurrections[]
In the led up to year 4 BXC (1256 NE), the planet changed to a state of noticeably decay from Shinra's harvesting of the planet's energy to fuel Midgar. Unrest grew throughout the city, but in small pockets, and several rebel movements such as Avalanche formed, and began working against Shinra to save the planet. Under the leadership of Cloud Strife, Avalanche was successful, and the corporation was overthrown. The populace began slowly working to undo the damage Shinra had done to the planet.
Heartless Conquest[]
In 84 AXC (1344 NE), the world was subject to the conquest of the Empire of the Heartless, under the leadership of one of its thirteen warlords, Sephiroth, which restored Shinra and the planet was split between the two of them.
