Dr. Gordon Freeman is a male human from Golmar Earth. He is the most-known resistance soldier. He is a theoretical physicist who is forced to defend himself and the human species against hostile aliens and other enemies following an experiment gone wrong. In the process, he becomes an almost legendary resistance hero, eventually becoming one of the leaders of an uprising against the Combine in Golmar Earth. His work, along with the works of Drs Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner, was instrumental to the creation of the Kleiner-Freeman-Vance Drive Systems, the primary non-Combine, and non-Ancient method the wider Multiverse uses for multiversal travel.
Biography[]
Early life and MIT[]
Freeman was born and raised in the state of Seattle, Washington, he showed great interest and aptitude in the areas of quantum physics and relativity at a young age. His earliest heroes were Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and Richard Feynman. At age 6, he even constructed a butane-powered tennis ball cannon.
While visiting the University of Innsbruck in the late 1990s, Freeman observed a series of seminal teleportation experiments conducted by the Institute for Experimental Physics. Practical applications for teleportation became his obsession, and he eventually attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in which Isaac Kleiner became his mentor. In 1999, he received his doctorate (Ph.D.) from MIT with a thesis paper entitled Observation of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement on Supraquantum Structures by Induction through Nonlinear Transuranic Crystal of Extremely Long Wavelength (ELW) Pulse from Mode-Locked Source Array (essentially about the teleportation of matter through extremely dense elements).
After graduating from MIT, Gordon travels to Austria and observes a series of teleportation experiments conducted by the Institute for Experimental Physics in Innsbruck. Eventually, he becomes disappointed with the slow pace of teleportation research in academia and begins to search for a job outside the education sector.
By coincidence, Freeman's MIT mentor Dr. Isaac Kleiner has taken charge of a research project at a government-owned, integrated research facility known as the Black Mesa Research Facility and offers Freeman a job. He accepts, hoping that at least part of the immense funding would go towards civilian applications of astrophysics and quantum computing.
At the start of Half-Life, Gordon Freeman is 27 years old, who has been working for a while at the Black Mesa Research Facility under a "classified" administrative sponsor. He owns a Level 3 Research Associate position, is accommodated in the Level 3 Dormitories in the Black Mesa North Wing, alone in room 309.
He is assigned to the Anomalous Materials department doing nuclear, subatomic, and quantum research. Despite having obtained a Ph.D. from the prestigious MIT, the laboratory work that the player does as Freeman (pressing a button and pushing a cart) does not require any intellectual expertise at all (Though a possibility is all of his intellectual expenses happened before the events of the game).
Barney Calhoun pokes fun at this in the beginning portion of Half-Life 2 when Freeman performs similar "technical" assistance (pushing a switch and attaching a fallen plug back into a socket). Barney then goes on to joke that Gordon's MIT education "really pays for itself."
During their time at the facility, Freeman and Calhoun would compete with each other to be the first to retrieve Dr. Kleiner's keys whenever he locked them in his office in Black Mesa (apparently a fairly regular occurrence) without resorting to conventional means. This is where Freeman learned to make use of ventilation shafts to infiltrate rooms and buildings. Indeed, Freeman and Calhoun crawled through numerous ventilation shafts in Half-Life and Half-Life: Blue Shift, respectively.

Notes[]
- Given he does not talk, nor make any vocalizations when hurt outside of pained breaths, its' likely he's born without the ability to verbally communicate, however he is not deaf, as he can hear, instead he's born with a defect to his brain that prevents him from being able to properly speak, so, in this setting we have him being born with apraxia, which helps explains his inability to verbally communicate but still process words and languages.
- Due to his inability to verbally communicate, he usually communicates via sign language, of which his friends and family have learned over time too.
- He's a native of Seattle, Washington, and in the context of this setting he likely return there to help rebuild it along side other surviving Seattle natives, with Alyx in toe, following the end of the revolt.
- After the revolt and civil war, he went on to work in the field he worked so hard in education to get, theoretical physics, not wishing to get dragged into any more conflicts or battles for survival, which he has shown to be quite capable of doing, although he has been the subject of repeated Combine and or Axis assassination attempts and all of them fail, and the times he has left Golmar he frequently gets attacked by Combine forces as they have a standing "kill on sight" order on him, Kleiner, Vance, Alyx, Barney and Adrien, but like with the assassination attempts he survives all such attempts on his life as well.
