The Hirogen (Borg Designation 479, Second Human Empire: Keilaes'hundai) were a nomadic species of hunters who roamed huge distances in the Delta Quadrant. They viewed other lifeforms as prey and treated them as such, showing little evidence of morality. The Hirogen from both Duyi'zu and Nuyi’zu Universe drew the interest of the Axis of Empires and the Horde for their skills and hunting, most notably the Combine, Galactic Empire and criminal organisations, but rarely do they acknowledge other races as their equal, only if they have anything to offer in value such as worthy prey and are approached with caution.

Biology and Appearance[]

In terms of appearance, the species show characteristics of both mammal and reptilian based lifeforms. Such characteristics have led to some speculation that the modern day Hirogen may be the products of genetic engineering. Their skin resembles that of a reptile with a rough pebble-like appearance to it. Typically, this tends to be tan or beige in color though this could vary but the entire species lacks any form of body hair. On the other end of the spectrum is their warm-blood nature and their capacity to bear live young similar to mammals.

A more notable aspect of the Hirogen is their great height. They are shown to normally tower over humans. This allows them to use their size and strength to intimidate as well as overpower others such as most humanoids afforded to them by their advanced muscle and nervous system. Hirogen adult males were quite large, standing above the average height of other known humanoid species. Despite their height, they are able to move in silence and the fact that they emitted no scent allows them to surprise their prey. Their sensory perception was acute, a feature that served well as the Hirogen were an aggressive hunting species. The Hirogen also possessed an impressive immune system. The Hirogen used an enzyme to break down the bones and muscle tissue of their prey, suggesting that the Hirogen used some of their victims as food.

The color of Hirogen blood is red.

Culture and Society[]

T he Hirogen were once a great civilization and an advanced culture. However, by the early 15th century NE, they were hunting themselves to extinction. The entire Hirogen society, from social rituals, to art, to religious beliefs, centered around "the hunt". Their existence was driven by the pursuit of prey and it had carried them across huge distances. Hirogens will organize themselves into packs of hunters lead by one designated Alpha. A Hirogen's status is determined by the number of prizes from the hunt, which are usually body parts. Most Hirogen roamed the Delta Quadrant seeking prey either alone or in small groups.

One of the rituals surrounding the hunt involved hunters applying paint to their faces and helmets for both the hunt and the kill. Even with no face paint available, one specific Hirogen fighter who was forced to fight in the Tsunkatse matches still went through the ritual of running his finger over his face, as if applying paint.

Though physically powerful, the race often trains themselves further for battle. This obsession with hunting, however, means that they neglect every other aspect of their civilization. All their energy is put into their hunts which are becoming unproductive and exhausted. The Hirogen's cultural and scientific advancement has come to a standstill.

Their culture demands that the hunters study their prey to anticipate and understand their abilities. Older hunters believe that study is important to make sure they do not become the hunted. Choosing the most appropriate weapon to make the kill was considered important; a scythe-like knife was one of the preferred methods for close range. Great importance was placed upon the moment of the kill and it was believed that the way a creature behaved when it was wounded was the key to its destruction. Hirogen were known to display disappointment when the species they chose to hunt proved to be unchallenging. However, being the first to hunt a certain kind of prey in itself caused some envy. They rarely saw other humanoids as equals because they often did not consider non-Hirogen as hunters. As a result, being called "worthy prey" by a Hirogen was meant as a great compliment. The Hirogen believed never to sympathize with their prey. However, they did bestow a rather unique compassion towards their prey, believing that they should never let their prey suffer.

Most Hirogen vessels usually ravel alone, sometimes with a crew consisting of as few as merely two members. One such vessel was known to have spanned a radius of a thousand light years in just five years; it had also visited as many as ninety star systems in a single year. Occasionally, however, Hirogen vessels were encountered in groups or packs. This was more common if they were hunting a challenging and resilient prey. The Hirogen social structure was organized into packs of male hunters similar to a wolf pack, each led by a Hirogen known as the Alpha Hirogen. The second-in-command was the Beta HIrogen – if the Alpha died, the Beta became the Alpha.

After the Hirogen caught their prey in a fair hunt, they claimed their 'relic'. They removed the skeletal system, muscles, internal organs, ligaments, and tendons by a surgical procedure known as an osteotomy. Unusual relics brought envy from other Hirogen males, and Hirogen females desired a male who had such unusual relics. These items couldn't be taken before the moment of the kill. Status was determined by possession of prizes from hunts, often body parts or technology obtained from their prey. These prizes, called "trophies" or "relics", were displayed in nets hanging from the ceilings or walls of their vessels. In the case of skulls, they were often mounted as a wall display.

History[]

Technology[]

The Hirogen are placed as an ancient and dominant species in the Delta Quadrant region from the Duyi'zu Universe, roaming vast distances in pursuit of worthy prey. While portrayed as an ancient race, their technology is not overly superior to that of the Federation, yet unable to match that of the Combine. Stations purpoirtedly built by them long ago use quantum singularities for power, however, and it is hinted their society has been stagnating for thousands of years. They were advanced enough to resist Borg attacks for many years, however, judging from their presence in the Delta Quadrant.

Trivia[]

  • The Hirogen share many similarities with other races that value hunting, namely the Yautja and Trandoshans. This may also align with certain ancient cultures of the Kilominitic who value of hunting.
