Arch-Enemy: The United Earth Federation, and its successor state, the Grand Terran Empire.
Awakening the Sleeping Giant: the Free Systems Republic did start out as small compared to the UEF with a handful or races joining against the common foe, yet in military and political with support of the Alliance, they had managed to fend the Federation off and maintained political power for centuries and at a point prior to the Allied Civil War, the FSR gained much more supports to inspire joining them and eventually reorganised into the Commonwealth of Allied Systems to stand against the Grand Terran Empire.
Badass Army: The FSR and the Commonwealth has gained a pretty strong army to face off the Grand Terran Empire. They have many who fought in the First War and even trained by the Alliance veterans to build a strong badass army.
The technology the Sekrosians and the Dorrin discover by the mysterious Elder race gave an advantage to keep the Federation at bay for a while.

New Galactic Republic: Both formed to fight against their imperial foes who hold a greater power and inspire rebellion to many planets. This may have given many the inspiration of the Galactic Civil War in the Viau Universe.
Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Could be somewhat of the European Union in a way.

Foil: To the UEF, the Free Systems Republic was formed to fight for freedom against the Tyranny of the GTE, and unlike the UEF, they never fell in the same path as their foe did.
The Republic: As by name given to represent various races and cultures, while some do have different systems such as the Sekrosians having now made elected chancellors or monarchs to serve the Sekros senate, it has officially become more like the Federation traits prior the Inio'zioni War.
The Resistence:
Fictional United Nations: As they earn the name "United Systems Republic."
Superior Successor: After the Grand Terran Empire dissolved and fractured, t he Free Systems Republic, now renamed the Commonwealth of Allied Systems takes over as the dominant power of the Inio'zioni, they maintained a strong control of the Milky Way and ensure to restored it from the damage caused by the Empire.
