Great Multiverse Wiki

Time travel is the ability to or the act of travel forward or backward in time, breaking the seemingly irreversible flow of time. The study of this phenomenon is one of the focuses of temporal mechanics. Alterations to historical events can cause, among other things, alternate timelines and realities. This has been demonstrated among several universes such as the Doon’kin Universes.

Some entities are adaptable of travelling through time such as The Timekeeper, Timeline Creator.

The United Federation of Planets and the Tau'ri-Jaffa Alliance, both members of the Alliance of Nations had some form of time travel ability since during the Great War as well as the Time Lords. Regulations on time travel were later imposed to prevent alterations from being made to the timelines of many universes. In addition to the Federation and the TJA, the Borg Collective, Bajorans, Empire of the Combine Race, Sontarans, Cybermen, Dalek and the Klingon Empire were known to have some form of time travel capabilities.

History[]

The Timekeeper may have been the very first known time traveller and observe the periods between the past, present and future.

The Time Lords from the Doon'kin Universes were the first to discover Time Travel and master the ability during the Dark Times, to prevent chaos and instability, they uphold the law of prohibiting interference of other races or the alterations of their timelines.

Historical research in 2268 (1414 NE) suggested the Federation was capable of controlled time travel and used this ability at the very least for research purposes.

Methods of Time Travel[]

Wormholes and solar flares[]

Certain events could be caused by by artificially, especially by Stargate without warning: when a wormhole travels close enough to a star while there is a solar flare, its path may be altered and lead through time. Sometimes, objects sent through such a wormhole will reach the destination, but in the other time period, sometimes wormholes will connect with the same gate in an other time.

The first instance of the Tau'ri traveling through time occurred in 1999 (1462 NE). This time it happened solely by accident, when SG-1 ended up in 1969 (1432 NE). Later, in 2010 (1473 NE), SG-1 successfully and intentionally opened a wormhole to the past, altering the future and preventing depopulation of Earth by the Aschen.

The computations done normally by the Dial Home Device to compensate for stellar drift had to be accounted for by Captain Samantha Carter in her dialing computer software. These computations also had to account for how close the wormhole formed to the Sun. Carter had done research into other uses of the Stargate technology, including time travel. In her research, she investigated the impact solar flares would have on a wormhole and proposed that these flares, if predicted, could make time travel via the Stargate possible. A solar flare occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. This magnetic energy along with their Earth's gravitational field, according to Carter, would bend the wormhole and cause it to return to Earth. Basically, they wouldn't travel through space as much as they would time in the space-time continuum.

One such notable fact was a Time Hole which exist in one of the universes as according to the Space Corps were a myth.

Quantum Leap[]

Time Machine[]

Various time machines have been built by numerous methods, One notable time machine was developed by the Ancients from the Eur'uui Universe who lived on the planet designated P4X-639. The Ancients had been dying out from a mysterious plague. They took advantage of the geomagnetic disturbance which occurred every fifty or so years to power the device. Unfortunately, the machine only generated a short-term continuous loop. The creators of the machine attempted to fix it, but were unsuccessful. They shut down the machine, recorded their failure on the walls and obelisks surrounding the device, and let the end come. Dr. Daniel Jackson translated the text and determined how to shut down the machine which had been activated by an alien archaeologist named Malakai. Malakai did not have the same translating skills as Daniel and didn't realize that the machine would never work in the way he intended (to go back in time over twelve years to see his dead wife alive once more). The machine was never able to send the traveler back further than ten hours, and as long as the machine was operational, the traveler looped in time for those ten hours.

The second time machine was built by a Lantean Scientist known as Janus. He created the time machine in the form of a small space craft with a time machine built in. This time machine generated a field of some kind around the spacecraft rather than using the wormhole to travel through time.

The Time Jumper discovered by SG-1 on Harold Maybourne's planet could only make jumps of at least a few hundred years or more at a time, so a traveler, for example, couldn't travel to 1918 (1361 NE) from 2005 (1468 NE).

The technology of the two timeships presented in the Stargate universe are so nearly identical that it is possible that they were both built by the same Ancient, Janus. Janus' machine was used to travel back in time 10,000 years in the Pegasus Galaxy and was destroyed in the past on orders of Moros. Janus, however, was one of the Ancients who returned to Earth 10,000 years ago and he could have built a second machine which was found in Maybourne's planet in the Milky Way Galaxy

Temporal Magic[]

Teleportation Malfunction (unintentional)[]

This often happens to several such as one event that accidentally sent Julian Bashir and Benjamin Sisko to 2024 DUyi'zu () prior to the Bell Riots. Technically, anyone who ever uses a form of FTL travel such as Slipstream is traveling in a time machine.

Emmett Brown's Delorean[]

Vex[]

The Vex have the ability not only to travel and to alternate timelines.

Gallifrayen Time Capsule: Tardis[]

Time Lords were able to achieve time travel after Omega converted a star into a black hole. They used the Eye of Harmony thereafter to power their civilisation and power their time travel facilities from TARDISes to the extraction chambers which could pluck individuals out of the timeline safely before they died.

Group 935 Teleporters[]

Unintentionally teleport people to a place in time for a short period).

Time and Space rifts[]

Extradimensional planes[]

Most dimensions that are related to time travel would exist between time and space, one such dimension such as the World Between worlds, otherwise referred to as the Vergence Scatter, able to gain access to a collection of doors and pathways existing between time and space.

Side-effects[]

The side effects caused by time travel on different types of lifeforms can be varied and depend on the method of time-travel. One of the incidents such as after Jonathan Archer was sent by Daniels ten months into his subjective past, his body was physically native to 2151 Duyi'zu (1308 NE). The Captain was confused how he could have the (future) memories of 2152 Duyi'zu (1309 NE) and not be a displaced duplicate of himself.

This is not always necessarily the case, when James T. Kirk encountered a very different 24th century Duyi'zu than was shaped by the "natural" flow of history.

In the 29th century, subjects undergo "temporal integration" when too many multiples are the outcome from their time travel activity. This results in a unified individual, capable of being accountable to all consequences that have- and haven't yet-taken place

One of the incidents when Marty McFly inadvertently travelled to 1955, his interaction with his parents had almost caused the timeline to completely change and erased from existence, but also dramatically changed after Biff Tannon from 2015 gave knowledge of the horse races to his younger self using the DeLorean, becoming rich and powerful and dramatically changed the course of events of his reality's timeline.

Among such major effects is the Speedforce created by Metahuman Speedsters from certain universes who not only change timelines but create a whole new timeline or new alternate universe.

Known Time Travellers[]

Notes[]

  • While Alterations could be created, the Entities such as the Timeline Creator and Timekeeper could force no alterations to the affected known multiverse and largely allowed minor alterations to occur only.
  • The Boys from the Dwarf crew had experienced time travel often, mainly by accident or malfunction of machinery they tamper with.
  • While many had concern over time travel to certain point in a known universe's past before the year they were discovered and exposed to Combine Nanites in risk of changing history, Siegfried said it was no concern and had that covered as well as Endea travelled to a point in time to communicate with the nanites to be dormant until a certain point in time to maintain a stable timeline.
  • According to Rommie, there are multiple theories regarding time travel, with one theory stating that timeline is fixed, meaning that no matter what a person does, history can never be changed, unknown that this was caused by the Timekeeper to prevent timelines being altered drastically and cause temporal disrupters. Yet at some point most timelines in other universes can be altered Another theory states that time is constantly in flux meaning changing the past in even the slightest way can have infinite consequences for the future.
