The United Nations of Earth (UNE), formerly known as simply the United Nations, is an interstellar government within the Vaee'keenlo Universes that operates as the governing body of humanity in the Sol System.

Origins[]
Foundation of the UN and political strife[]
The United Nations of Earth was formerly the body known as simply the United Nations, an international alliance of countries formed after the Second Vaee'keenlo Earth Civil War that led humanitarian efforts and created global legislative measures. While it had several means to enforce those powers, the UN was effectively useless as an official government. Its influence prevented the outbreak of a third planetary civil war for the 20th and 21st centuries, but lesser wars still ravaged the continents of Earth.
By the mid 21st century, only the United States, Russian Federation, European Union, and People's Republic of China were considered capable world powers, but they were consumed with political strife and conflict over resources. The spirit of international cooperation flickered dimly, with the greatest symbol of cooperation in the 2000s being the ISS II, a successor to the previous International Space Station, decommissioned in the 2030s.
Instability would increase in the globe's lesser powers as time went on, and the United Nations' current system of operations became increasingly ineffective at countering it. Reforms were forced in the late 2000s as the UN adopted more centralized methods of creating stability. The UN developed a parliament, created an office of the president with representative democratic elections, and by the 2150s, even began creation of its own military, the United Nations Forces.
In the wake of a new age of space expansion, the United Nations of Earth stepped in as the de facto governing body of humanity on Earth and turned their sights on the stars. Reforms went smoothly in the first and second-world nations, but many who opposed the UN's increasing power made their voices heard violently. The Mauritanian Police Action of 2088 (2293 NE) proved to be the largest and bloodiest resistance to the UN's Worldwide Integration Initiative. Over a violent six weeks, the riots and clashes with UN provosts came to an end when support suddenly turned against the resistance after the rioters conducted several indiscriminate civilian bombings.
Pre-FTL space exploration and technological progress[]
One of the first major projects for space exploration was the UN-sponsored Ulysses Initiative, in which six ark ships, each carrying 250,000 colonists, were dispatched to the Oort Cloud, a small unstable wormhole at the edge of the Sol System, at the end of the 21st century. All ships disappeared and were never heard from again by the UNE. All ships were presumed lost, and the wormhole disappeared as well. The Initiative was considered a great unforeseeable disaster, though unbeknownst to the UNE, one ship survived and went on to crash on the moon Unity in the Deneb System, eventually creating the militaristic Commonwealth of Man.
While the mid-21st century had seen American and Chinese astronauts land on Luna and Mars, the UNE moved to create permanent domed settlements on all possible planets in Sol by 2140. Research and mining stations were established all over the Sol System. The first shipyard would be constructed in orbit of the star Sol, and in secret, a coalition of international scientists began working to make the first Alcubierre drive a reality.
Age of the Stars[]
Though not all of humanity supported the rule of the UNE, it remains the head of mankind's power in the known galaxy. By 2200 (2405 NE), the Sol System had flourished under UNE rule, though there were still many issues on Earth. Humanity had yet to expand beyond the Sol System, but the thanks to scientific breakthroughs with extraterrestrial research, the Alcubierre drive was finally produced. Months of planning and construction led to the first FTL-equipped Human ship, the science vessel UNS Copernicus, being launched on 1 January 2200, at the start of the new year and new century. Recently elected president Dolores Muwanga gave a famous speech as the Copernicus began its FTL transition to the Alpha Centauri System.

Like most democracies, the UNE holds elections every ten years to determine the next President of the United Nations of Earth, who serves their ten-year term before the next election and is capable of running for reelection.

The United Nations Forces, informally referred to as the UNE Military and known to non-humans as the Earth Forces, is the official combined military forces of the United Nations of Earth. After the preceding UN Peacekeeping Forces proved increasingly unsuccessful in their duties during the turbulence of the 21st century, the UN's largest members began initiatives to form a more centralized military force to maintain and defend UN law and interests, based on military doctrine of the United States Armed Forces and the European Union Combined Forces.
