The Wehrmacht (German pronunciation: [ˈveːɐ̯maxt] ( listen), lit. 'defence force'[N 2]) was the unified armed forces of Greater German Empire. It consisted of the Heer (army), the Kriegsmarine (navy), Space and the Luftwaffe (air force). The designation Wehrmacht for GGE's military replaced the previously used term, Reichswehr and constituted the Third Reich’s efforts to rearm their nation to a greater extent than the Treaty of Versailles permitted. One of Hitler’s most overt and audacious moves was the establishment of a mighty fighting force (the Wehrmacht), an army designed for imperial conquest. Fulfilling the Nazi regime’s long term goals (unknown to their neighbors) of global conquest required massive investment and spending in the German armaments industry and conscription to properly man the Führer’s military machine.
